In the Arctic, there are a few invading species. Yet there's one above all of them, a creature that's had a massive negative impact (especially over the last few centuries) on it. That's right, it's us, the Human. We're the number one invasive species here. With a combination of our careless, destructive behavior and the climate change we're causing through pollution and global warming, areas of the Arctic are slowly being destroyed. We've directly and indirectly affected the environment. Through global warming, we're altering the weather of the Arctic, making it so that there are longer summers and shorter winters. Through our arrogance, we've brought our drills to the north and destroyed whole areas just for diamonds, gold, and other precious materials. This destruction destroys parts of ecosystems, and causes the deaths of animals.
There's been some issues lately over who "owns" the Arctic between Russia, Norway, Canada, and the USA. Canada's recently been sending soldiers up north to "police" the area, but in reality they're preparing for combat. Russia and Norway have been building new naval units geared towards "high intensity combat". With the separate countries trying to intimidate each other, they might cause an undermine of diplomacy and stability in the region. If there's a war in the Arctic, animals will die, the landscape will be destroyed, and ecosystems will be destroyed.
Oil. What do you think of when you hear the word? I think of money and death. Sure, oil isn't always bad. It helps our economy and helps keep our vehicles running every day. But it causes death as well. When oil is spilled, it has catastrophic effects on the environment! It can sink down to the bottom of the ocean and suffocate whatever lives down there, or stay floating and cover whatever happens to be swimming at the surface. Part of the reason the Arctic's even wanted is for it's oil. The governments don't care about the ecosystems or the animals. All they want to do is keep their economy strong through oil.
